Five Tips to Help Lower Your Gas Costs

  • Keep your tires fully inflated — When your tires are low on air, your gas mileage may go down as much as 15 percent.

  • Carpool when you can — Sharing a ride with someone cuts down on fuel costs and in some areas you get the added convenience of using the carpool lane.

  • Park in the shade — Parking in the shade will help keep your car cool. You will save money by not having to use the air conditioner as much.

  • Tune up — Keeping your car in tune will help improve gas mileage. A misfiring sparkplug can reduce your gas mileage by up to 30 percent.

  • Use lower octane gas — Use the lowest octane gas that is approved for your car. Check your owner's manual for octane requirements. Using higher octane than what is required will not provide better gas mileage or better performance.
